Belum Caves, located about 60 kilometers from Proddatur, is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Andhra Pradesh and is recognized as the longest natural cave system in the Indian subcontinent. Formed over millions of years by underground water flow through limestone formations, the caves extend for more than three kilometers and feature magnificent stalactites, stalagmites, spacious chambers, meditation halls, and naturally formed rock sculptures. Visitors walk through well-lit underground passages that reveal fascinating geological formations with names such as Thousand Hoods, Meditation Hall, Kotilingalu, and Patalaganga. The caves also have archaeological significance, with evidence suggesting that Buddhist and Jain monks once used them as meditation centers.
